Darlington Hippodrome
Overview
The New Hippodrome and Palace Theatre of Varieties opened on September 2, 1907, with a classic music hall bill, topped by "the Greatest of all Comediennes", Miss Marie Loftus, but the real star of the show was the Italian impresario who had brought the theatre to life. On that opening, there were two houses – 7pm and 9pm – with 2,000 people crammed into each, including 500 squeezed onto the wooden benches of the gallery with another 100 standing behind, watching what the local newspaper, The Northern Echo, called an "admirable" programme put together by Signor Rino Pepi to mark the launch of his third music hall.

- Guide, hearing and other assistance dogs are welcome.
- People who require an essential companion to accompany them to the theatre in order for them to access the venue, due to their disability, illness or other condition will receive a FREE essential companion ticket. Qualifying documentation must be provided at the box office to evidence their disability or circumstances that would require them to need an essential companion. Customers can still book and pay for tickets over the phone and can supply documentation through the post, or at the box office when they collect their tickets. Qualifying documentation • A letter confirming receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) • A letter confirming receipt of Attendance Allowance • A letter confirming receipt of Personal Independence Payments (PIP) • CredAbility Access Card (with +1 symbol) • Doctor's note (valid for 6 months) Once a customer has presented the required documentation, they will not need to present this again, however they may receive a phone call from the theatre in the future to check whether they still require this service. All essential companions must be aged 16 or over. Only one essential companion ticket is available per disabled customer. If a customer does not have access to any of the required evidence above but feels that they require an essential companion ticket to be able to attend the theatre, they can approach our box office manager to discuss their individual needs.
- In the Hippodrome, there is an induction loop in the auditorium and at the box office. We regret there is currently no induction loop at the Cornmill box office. The signer stands stage left (auditorium right) to interpret the dialogue. Displayed on electronic boards at either side of the stage at the same time as words are spoken. Sound effects or off-stage noises may also be included. Intended to help people with hearing loss, as well as those for whom English is a subsequent language.
