Access guidance
- The incline up to the ticket office is fairly steep and gives a realistic indication of the slope gradients around the 60-acre estate. The serpentine paths that meander around the estate were built two centuries ago for Georgian and Victorian tourists. Our cable car team will happily explain the boarding process to you. Our cable cars can accommodate most sizes of wheelchairs and mobility scooters (maximum 114cm x 70cm) and one accompanying friend. The cable car stewards will stop the cable car and put a ramp in place allowing you to stay in your chair and roll up the ramp into the cable car. Unfortunately, the natural formation of the caves makes them inaccessible to wheelchairs and those with reduced mobility. However, there is a film show in the Masson Pavilion which shows you what life was like for the miners all those years ago, and takes you on a visual and audio tour of the cave. We recommend that wheelchair users and those with reduced mobility do not take the steep slope down to the larger playground and do not proceed down to the Rutland Cavern. The slope may seem steep on the way down, but it's even steeper on the way up!
- The nearest car park is the Matlock Bath train station car park. There are 10 disabled parking bays. Take the access-for-all walkway beside the River Derwent to the cable car base station.
- There are two disabled toilets, one on the ground floor of the Treetops Centre and one beyond the Masson Cavern entrance.
- Guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted in all areas of the estate, with the exception of the underground caverns. This is for their own safety; we do not want them running off into the underground cavern network.
- If you are visually impaired, please tell the stewards and they will slow down the cable cars and help you board safely. If you have reduced hearing or vision, please advise your guide who will provide a written safety briefing and a script of both the Great Masson Cavern & Masson Pavilion tours in large or regular print.
