Access guidance
- Seating is available throughout the theatre where space allows, there is no fixed seating in corridor areas between the main spaces of our building. At the front of the theatre in our box office foyer, we have two small benches available for visitors. In our bar area, we have several table & chair seating arrangements. We are very happy to and can reserve tables ahead of your visit to ensure you have a comfortable visit. If there are no spare seats available during your visit and you require one, we would encourage you to speak to a member of staff who will be able to source a chair for you.
- Our front entrance on Westgate Street has step-free access via two ramps to our box office foyer, the bar area, accessible toilet and selected seating in the Dress Circle. The front doors open outwards, with the button to open them positioned on the opposite wall. As Theatre Royal is 200 years old and a listed building, we are unfortunately unable to provide lift access for customers. It's important to note all areas of the auditorium (except for the Dress Circle) are only accessible via stairs.
- Theatre Royal is a small Regency playhouse. The distance between public spaces are generally short. More detailed information to follow. You can explore a 'street view' style map on our building on our website under 'seating plan' here https://theatreroyal.org/your-visit/booking-information/
- An accessible toilet is available between the box office foyer & the bar area. Male & Female toilets are available in the bar area and Upper Circle with two additional single cubicles in the Upper Circle also. In the Dress Circle and Upper Circle, it is difficult to leave your seat during the performance if you are seated on the front or middle row. Sitting at the end of a row in the Pit, or back row of a Box would allow you to leave with least disturbance. The nearest toilets to the Pit seating are in the bar area accessed via stairs. The nearest toilets to Dress Circle seating are a short distance away in the bar area. The nearest toilets to Upper Circle seating are located up a few stairs in the Dress Circle corridor.
- Assistance Dogs are welcome at the theatre with selected seating in the Dress Circle most suitable. An Assistance Dog must stay with their owner at all times and water can be made available upon request. Theatre Royal is located in the town centre so there are limited grassed areas immediately nearby. Abbey Gardens is a short distance away.
- Customers who require support throughout the duration of their visit and would otherwise not be able to attend the theatre, are eligible for a free Essential Companion ticket for their carer.
